I am definitely a gravy fan and this recipe is easy and good! Once you start making your own gravy you will never go back to pre-packaged (whether jar or powder) again! This is a great meatloaf sauce.
Yield: approximately 4 cups (8 portions)
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1/2 cup flour
1 clove garlic, minced (You can substitute garlic powder or the jarred, minced garlic)
1/4 cup ketchup
1 teaspoon dijon mustard
1 Tablespoon worcestershire sauce
1 quart (4 cups) of cold beef broth
salt and pepper to taste
In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 5 minutes or until the mixture is golden brown and smells like cooked pie crust. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Whisk in one cup of broth and then add the rest of the ingredients, except salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer, whisking, and then reduce the heat to low and continue cooking for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Salt and pepper to taste.
The mysteries of home-made gravy have been revealed! Go forth and sauce!
